Martha Morrow| Academic award

Martha Morrow of Netley Abbey is the winner of our 2025 Academic Excellence award of £1,000!

Martha attended Netley Abbey Junior School and the Hamble School, achieving eleven Grade 9s at GCSE.
She has just completed her A-Levels at Winchester College in Philosophy, Music and Maths and will be starting university in London at Kings College London, to study Philosophy BA.
Located in the heart of London, the KCL philosophy department has particular strengths in the philosophy of mind, logic and philosophy of science, ethics and political philosophy, as well as an impressive coverage in the history of philosophy, ranging from pre-Socrates, through Medieval Philosophy and to the recent past.
Martha began to develop her love of philosophy whilst at the Hamble School, reading beyond the English GCSE syllabus and discovering how works such as Plato's Republic and Descartes' meditations informed the morality of the authors that she studied.

She had the privilege of continuing her studies at Winchester College, thanks to their bursary programme. The Philosophy department teachers encouraged her to pursue the subject at university, giving various suggestions of further reading which evolved into a strong interest in philosophy, with a focus on logic and how it can be applied.
After university, she hopes to work in a government think tank.

Martha has worked part-time to support her studies in various local businesses including The Jolly Friar, Pirate Pasties and as route crew for the Southampton marathon. She is also a GCSE English tutor for local students. She is currently Captain of rowing at the Winchester College Boat Club , competing at many British Rowing Events as an individual and team member.

London accommodation prices are extremely high, so Martha intends to work long hours in the holidays and part time during termtime to support herself. We hope that our grant will help her with the costs of university life in the capital. We wish Martha all the best and we are certain that she has a very bright future ahead of her.
